As soon as it was written + published, "Aloha 'Oe" became the most famous Hawaiian song of all time. Liliuokalani wrote the bittersweet ballad while she was being held in house arrest following the 1893 overthrow of her kingdom. The popular tune is still performed today in remembrance of the legendary Queen + the Hawaii she once knew.
