Though famous for her anthropological work on Pacific Island cultures, Margaret wrote more than 1000 articles on subjects of all sorts ~ including many cultural phenomena from her own neighborhood. In 1975, she wrote an essay for the women's magazine Redbook about Halloween that asked, "Where has all the mischief gone?" The former mischief-maker encouraged parents to find safe ways for their kids to play a few tricks.
All Hallows' Eve used to involve as many tricks as it did treats. In a culture where children were subject to adult authority, Halloween was an opportunity to take adolescent revenge on the world of adults!
