This biography by Carlton Jackson tracks the joys and challenges of Hattie's life and career, and suggests that Hattie was an "unwitting reformer" ~ helping to change the racist conventions of the entertainment industry by example rather than words.
When Hattie passed away from breast cancer in 1952, the Hollywood Cemetery still practiced racial segregation and would not honor her final wishes to be buried there. In 1999, the new owner of the cemetery, now called Hollywood Forever Cemetery, constructed a monument to honor Hattie. The inscription includes a dedication from Hattie's grand-nephew that references her 1940 Oscar acceptance speech.
