Susan talks with the Academy of Achievement about the special connection she has with her adopted state of Alaska. Her decision to move to a remote Alaska cabin at 20 ~ with nothing but 4 dogs ~ and teach herself mushing was radical. But she never did anything by halves, and Alaska was as happy to claim Susan as she was to claim her new home.
Susan's first cabin in Alaska had no running water or electricity. Even her family home at Trail Breaker Kennel was rustic, at best. Even as a child, she preferred extreme simplicity ~ as a child, Susan tried to convince her parents to tear down their Cambridge home and replace it with a log cabin.
