Lucy Maud wrote the manuscript for her first Anne novel in 1905. Her inspirations? A newspaper clipping she had saved about a couple requesting a boy orphan + being sent a girl instead. And, her own experience as an orphan of sorts, growing up with her grandparents on a Cavendish farm. L.M. was discouraged after her book was rejected by a couple publishers but when it went to print in 1908, it was a serious hit, going through 14 printings within a year. A first edition of Anne of Green Gables just sold for $27,500.
