A lifelong dog-lover, Edith helped found the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and always kept a half dozen pets to share her Lenox, Massachussets estate. She often wrote in bed surrounded by lounging dogs. Her studio overlooked a hill where she had created a pet cemetery, with a headstone for each departed companion. Here, she poses with a beloved pair of Chihuahuas.
